On the road from Syracuse to Palazzolo Acreide, it is possible to come across houses recalling a well-known history of agrarian reclamation, colonisation of the countryside and rural settlements. In Sicily, the fascist regime's propaganda work was particularly conspicuous, supported by the foundation of new villages: particularly famous are Mussolinia, near Caltagirone, or Borgo Bonsignore, not far from Ribera. But even simple rural houses, shoring up a landscape that was to be wrested from the latifundium in order to set up a more widespread system of land use, were developed according to essential schemes. Today, many of these are abandoned, and rarely has the architecture been modified over time. They may represent an additional thread of interest for those who immerse themselves in the hills of the province of Syracuse on the route to Pantalica.
