Mediterranean Passages
Syracuse and the Necropolis of Pantalica were included on the Unesco World Heritage List in 2005. The discovery of a megalithic construction called Anaktoron led to the hypothesis that Pantalica was an indigenous state, part of the mythical kingdom of Hyblon, representative of the Sicilian civilisation prior to Greek colonisation with contacts and exchanges with Mycenaean culture. With the increasing influence of Syracuse, the settlement and necropolis of Pantalica were abandoned. The new SIRACUSA–PANTALICA route stands in this very area and brings together the numerous historical, architectural and artistic testimonies left over time by the different civilisations that founded the Mediterranean heritage and culture.
